The Arjun Award winner, the Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra wins Siver medal at the eighteenth edition of the Athletics World Championships, 2022 at Hayward yield, U.S.
India’s top athlete, Neeraj Chopra makes history as he becomes the first Indian man and the second Indian ever to bag a medal at the World Championships, by winning this silver medal.
Before Neeraj, the only Indian to win a medal (bronze) is Anju Bobby George. The notable long jumper Anju Bobby George became the first Indian (also a Woman) ever to win at the World Championships held in 2003 in Paris. She won her bronze medal in the long jump event.
Neeraj Chopra made this best throw of 88.13 meters to win the silver medal, finishing second, making the countrymen proud.
Chopra started with a foul throw and completed the first three rounds with 82.39 and 86.37 meters. The fourth-round throw of 88.13 metres, his fourth career-best effort, put him in second place and helped him regain his rhythm. which he retained all the way through the end of the game. His fifth and sixth throws were fouls.
Anderson Peters of Grenada, the defending champion claimed the gold medal with the best throw of 90.54 meters.
Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, the Olympic silver winner finished third, claiming the Bronz medal with a throw of 88.909 meters.
The other competing Indian, Rohit Yadav, placed 10th with a best throw of 78.72 meters. Rohit produced a best throw of 80.42 meters during the qualification round, where he placed 11th overall.
At the Tokyo Olympics held the previous year, Chopra had won the maiden athletics gold for India. Neeraj Chopra is only the second Indian to win an Olympic gold medal, following the success of shooter Abhinav Bindra in the 2008 Beijing Games.
Medals and Awards received by Neeraj Chopra
He was given the “Arjun Award” in 2018. In 2002, he was honored with the “Vishisht Seva Medal” (VSM) at the Republic Day Honours. Chopra received “The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award,” India’s highest sporting honour, in 2021. At the Republic Day honors, 2022, he was decorated with two more awards, “Param Vishisht Seva Medal” and “Padam Shri” (the Fourth highest civilian honor)
In addition to all these bright medals and awards, the Army Sports Institute (ASI) stadium of Pune cantonment was renamed ”Neeraj Chopra Stadium” by Defence Minister Rajanath Singh on 27 August 2021.
