On Saturday, July 30, Maharashtrian Sanket Sargar made history by being the first Indian athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. In Birmingham, the 21-year-old earned silver in the men’s 55 kg weightlifting competition.
Aniq Mohamad of Malaysia won the gold with a total weight of 249 kg (107 kg in the snatch and 142 kg in the clean and jerk), and Sanket Sargar of India took home the silver with a weight of 248 kg (113kg in snatch, 135 in clean and jerk).
The Indian weightlifter lived up to the expectations by putting forth some calm, collected lifts in the snatch and clean and jerk categories in the men’s 55kg final.
Sanket Sargar, a national champion who competed in both the Khelo India University Games and the Khelo India Youth Games in 2020, was one of the favorites to bring home gold for India in weightlifting, which has historically been a major source of medals for the Commonwealth Games.
Saragr, topping the snatch
Sanket Sagar was at his finest when he broke both the national and Commonwealth records by clearing all three of his weights on his first attempt in the snatch event at the Asian qualifiers in Singapore in February 2022. (snatch – 113kg; clean and jerk – 143kg; total of 256kg).
Sargar’s highly awaited opponent, Malaysian Aniq Mohamad, matched Sargar’s initial lift of 107 kg with 107 kg on his first attempt.
But Sargar increased his advantage by lifting 111 kg in his second effort at the snatch. Dilanka Yogade of Sri Lanka began the competition with 105 kg, but he fell behind as the Birmingham audience became agitated by the Indo-Malaysian rivalry.
Aniq Mohamad attempted and failed to lift 111 kg twice. Sargar, on the other hand, increased his lead to 6 kg on his final effort by grabbing 113 kg.
With a best of 113 kg, which is also the national record, Sanket was in first place after the snatch round. Bin Kasdan was in second place with the best snatch lift of 107 kg, and Dilanka Isuru Kumara Yodage of Sri Lanka was third with a lift of 105 kg. The referees first cleared the Sri Lankan’s lift of 112 kg in his third try but later ruled it to be a foul.
