Another clinical performance by the Indian Women’s team has led them to reach the semifinals of the Commonwealth Games 22. India finished second in Group A in the points table and join World Champions Australia, New Zealand, and England in the race for the gold.
India will be up against the winner of the New Zealand vs England clash in the semi-final scheduled to be held on August 6. Except for the opening game against Australia, the Indian women’s team has bossed the competition winning by huge margins against both Pakistan and Barbados women’s teams.
Strong start to the innings
The toss was won by Barbados women’s team and they elected to field first. They drew first blood into the match when Indian vice-captain Smriti was adjusted leg before for 5.
Shafali Verma and Jemmimah Rodrigues didn’t let the momentum carry on with the Barbados team as they batted valiantly en route to their 71-run stand for the second wicket in 7.4 overs. While Shafali was there, boundaries kept coming for the Indian team as she scored aggressively.
Mid innings collapse
Shafali became a victim of poor communication between the duo. Jemmimah called for a two and then said no midway while Shafali was ball watching and a long way down the lane, so eventually, she was run out for 43.
The Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur was out for a golden duck and soon the wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia followed her steps back to the pavillion for 6.
Good finish towards the end
Rodrigues and Deepti stitched on a 70-run stand in 7 overs for the 5th wicket stand and helped India finish at 162-4 after the end of 20 overs.
The former scored a half-century and remained unbeaten on 56*(46). For the Barbados team, their captain Hayley Matthews and Shakera Selman were the standout bowlers returning with economical figures of 1-29 and 1-17 respectively.
Renuka’s Magical Spell in the powerplay
Once Renuka Singh held the ball in her hands, she breathed fire. She did not let the Barbados top order settle in and hence the Barbados Women never got going. She scalped 4 wickets in her 4-over opening spell and put Indian Women on top of the game.
The other bowlers joined in the fun too and made run-scoring difficult for the Barbados Women. In their quota of 20 overs, the Barbados women could just score only 62 runs, handing India a 100-run victory over them and also qualifying for the semis.
Brief Scores
IndW : 162-4(Rodrigues 56, Shafali 43, Selman 1-17)
BarbadosW : 62-8(Knight 16, Renuka Singh 4-10)
