Covid on halt, a new deadly disease, ‘Monkeypox’, has arrived in the world to compensate for its position.
What is Monkeypox?
Monkey is a viral disease which shows the visibility of lymph nodes and swollen blisters throughout the skin. Other non-visible effects include pained muscles, high fever, and swollen glands. All the above symptoms display variations in each case, just like the coronavirus.
The naming of this disease comes from its main causing factor, the monkeypox virus, which comes from the same genus of the smallpox-causing virus. Coming in two variants for humans, the West African type monkeypox virus is said to be less intense than the Central African (Congo basin) type one.
Scientific results show its commencement can be through two factors, human or animal. The animal factor includes infected meat or scratches and bites, whereas the human medium includes exposure to infected body fluids or objects.
Origin
The primary documentation of the monkeypox disease started as an illness in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970. At that time, it was uncommon and was a warning for the non-usage of the smallpox vaccine.
The Captive monkeys living in tropical rainforest regions were to be the first identifier of this deadly virus in 1958 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Further, In 1988 it was found as 85% protective through the application of the smallpox vaccine.
Identification
Its symptomatic identification tends to showcase around 5 to 21 days after the actual date of contact. The monkeypox symptom cycle starts with non-visible symptoms like influenza and continues with the resemblance of chickenpox or measles.
The final symptoms are said to almost appear as smallpox, but with the presence of swollen glands. But in the 2022 outbreak, cases with lessons only in the genitals with swallowing difficulty are also noted.
Prevention and Cure
As any exact cure isn’t available, prevention of Monkeypox starts with the vaccination of smallpox. Washing hands regularly and preventing frequent contact are also said to be effective with scientific verification for further prevention.
A series of treatments termed ‘Tecovirimat’ approved by the European Union and the United States is said to be the only treatment available currently. The Tecovirmat is said to cure various poxviruses, including the monkeypox virus.
The outcome of these diseases after healing includes left pale marks convertible into dark scars. The death rate of the virus stands between 0-11%, depending on the region and virus type. In the 2022 outbreak, the victim ‘West African Type‘ has caused more deaths in the young and HIV affected.
Its outbreak history
The WHO declared the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) regarding Monkeypox on 23rd July 2022. Before that, the viral virus has been a frequent guest in the outbreak history.
● 2003 United States outbreak
It all started in May 2003, when a young child got bit by a prairie dog near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As A Result of the bite, the child got rashes and a fever. It further commenced with reporting 71 more cases of Monkeypox. Through scientific research, the victim was the human monkeypox virus traced from the Gambian pouched rats imported from Ghana.
Confirmation of deaths was none in this outbreak.
● 2017-19 Nigeria outbreak
Earlier from 10 cases in 1970-79, this outbreak leapt to a three-digit quantity. The virus was affecting more young male adults, unlike in the past. It widely affected the whole world, but the cases in outer Africa were just of tourists who came to visit Africa, which resulted in terming it a Nigerian outbreak. As it matched the timeline of Covid-19, people feared contacting the medicals, resulting in the wrong survey of cases.
According to the reports, this outbreak further fueled reporting of Monkeypox cases in the United Kingdom and Singapore.
