Simply put, a microtrend is a propensity toward a trend or a phenomenon that lasts for a few years or days. Microtrends are present everywhere, in fashion, business, etc.
What are microtrends in fashion?
Microtrends in fashion are definite and well-cut designs of lower-end clothing that lose out on popularity over some time. Fashion microtrends are trends and clothing that frequently go in and out of style. For example, animal prints, Vivienne Westwood’s pearl chokers, and the House of Sunny green Hockney dress.
Microtrends in fashion encourage fast fashion and this generates more waste in the fashion industry. Sure, microtrends are great when they’re is in season, but once the trend becomes outdated, so does the clothing, which increases waste and is not good for the environment in the long run.
Why are microtrends bad?
Microtrends, as you know are a propensity toward a trend that lasts a few years, or in the fashion industry, a few seasons. The older clothes from the previous season get wasted and generate huge amounts of waste in the fashion industry.
A lot of effort and work is put into making a single garment, and all this gets wasted because of microtrends. This also causes harm to the environment. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of carbon emissions generated globally.
How do you eliminate microtrends?
Develop a personal style
This is easy. Just take a look at your wardrobe and look out for pieces that you wear the most and the pieces that you wear the least. Now you have an idea of what you like and don’t like. You can now invest in timeless pieces that you know you will wear.
Be practical and think more about styling
I know that it’s easy to give in to fashion trends, but instead try looking out for quality, timeless pieces that have great style and go well with your wardrobe. Always look out for more sustainable pieces. When you curate your wardrobe according to your style, you not only express yourself but you are also being mindful and eco-friendly.
Put your clothes away
When it comes to dressing according to season, instead of buying new winter coats every season, simply put your clothes away. This way you’re not being wasteful and bringing out these clothes every season also brings a feeling of excitement every time.
Let’s all be mindful and eco-friendly and create a sustainable environment for us and the generations to come!
