Extracurricular activities – what exactly are they?
The term ‘extracurricular implies that it is an addition to the typical syllabus and books of academic coursework. There is no doubt that extracurricular activities play a significant and vital role in developing a person’s social, physical, and mental well-being.
These activities are also graded, and their credit is taken into account often. They act as a bonus while taking College admission or to include in a CV. This extracurricular scale carries a range of activities and meets distinct choices of learners.
Why is it important to learn some additional skills?
Studies vs extracurricular activities
The Indian education system, mainly inclusive of parents and teachers, tends to give more importance to grades than anything else. In many cases, a child is seen as more active and interested and well-doing in one such activity than studies. Parents and teachers used earlier Harsh methods to reciprocate the child towards studies and score good academics.
However, with changing times and the importance taught by various professionals in various fields, these harsh methods have diminished, and those extracurricular activities are more or less given equal importance to a child’s overall development.
In this article, we will discuss a few extracurricular activities which are now considered full-time jobs
Dance
Dance or dancing culture has been gaining popularity in Indian society since Bollywood happened. No sooner it was given importance as well. Dance is an excellent way to sharpen the mind as one needs to coordinate with music, beat, remember and perform all simultaneously.
It is proven that dancing relieves stress, builds confidence, and increases well-being. In the modern era, people of all ages seek to learn dance forms and enhance their self-confidence through this extracurricular activity as it has become a full-time job.
Arts and crafts
Arts and crafts are one of the best ways to express one’s creative ideas. Adding them as extracurricular one enhances focus, develops visual learning skills and problem-solving skills, increases flexibility in thinking and is fun to do an activity.
Arts and crafts include painting or origami and several things such as stitching, knitting, t-shirt art, pottery, sculpture, woodworking, calligraphy, and many more. Various age groups also enjoy this activity, and they learn. Professionals also put up exhibitions for earning.
Sport
Despite hockey being the national sport, cricket was the only sport celebrated globally. But today, with the advancement of sports culture, the government is putting efforts to make India and its youth recognizable globally in sports; many other sports such as boxing, wrestling, badminton, chess, archery and many others have gained importance.
As an encouragement to the Sports culture, the government gives government jobs to sports players aside from National and International competitions.
Cooking
Cooking, often seen as a menial household activity, has gained massive respect past few years. People talented in the culinary arts sometimes specialize in cooking courses to express their skills both creatively and in a healthy way. Cooking professionals have taken Indian cuisine to global recognition.
Stage
drama and music- once again, thanksgiving to Bollywood for rooting the importance of stage drama, music and many other performing arts to the Indian society. These activities broaden thinking capability, boost confidence and enhances one personality overall.
It allows an individual to learn social behaviour patterns and be a better one. Actors, musicians, comedians and other performing individuals are seen as professionals in this field.
Conclusion
Overall today’s Indian education system does not revolve around just academics. It is beyond that. These extracurricular activities have gained massive respect and importance in the past few years. We hope to see many more on the list and get recognized so that no individual is developmentally disabled from their passion and no talent is seen going in vain.
