Today, let’s dig a little deep into the story of India’s leading online lingerie selling brand Zivame. Initially, ‘Ziva’ was supposed to be the start-up’s name, but due to its unavailability, we all are familiar with Zivame now, which means ‘Radiant me’.
This online retail store is a platform where Indian women can choose from over 5000 styles, 50 brands, and 100 sizes in activewear, innerwear, shapewear, sleepwear, and others.
Currently, it delivers its products all over India except the Lakshwadeep Islands. Keep reading to inspire your soul from the story of Richa Kar, who took a flight of success by breaking taboos of Indian society.
About the founder – Zivame
Richa Kar was born in Jamshedpur and did her graduation from BITS Pilani in the year 2002. Later, in 2007, she did her post-graduation from SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS).
Kar worked in the IT sector, and after she graduated from NMIMS, she started working with Spencers and SAP, which helped her gain tremendous experience in the retail field.
Today, her initiative of building Zivame is not only profitable for women but also deserves massive applause for bringing a change in the mindset of society.
Birth and Growth
In India, if a teen girl mistakenly says the word “bra and panty” aloud or wants to buy her favourite colour in bra at the shop, she is either silenced by her mother or given a judgemental look the male salesperson at the shop.
Amidst such comments, taunts, and restrictions, Richa Kar dared to go against the false perception of the Indian society by trusting herself and believing in her idea of providing the Indian women with a platform.
They can prevent themselves from people’s looks and buy their favourite-coloured bra and choose between different patterns and brands.
While working with SAP, Richa Kar dealt with a closely associated client with the world-famous lingerie brand, Victoria Secret. She discovered that the taboo is strong in the country regarding women’s innerwear, and there was no such solution to resolve this problem.
This was the birth of the platform, Zivame. Richa wanted to build a platform for Indian women to dodge such uncomfortable situations and stares while buying lingerie of their choice. To put her thoughts into action, she started to collect funds from her family and friends.

She gained investors like DG Ventures, Unilazer Ventures, and Kalaari Capital. Zivame got online in 2011 and instantly, after 5 hours, got its first male client from Indore who bought goods worth ₹7000, and then there was no stopping.
Gradually, the small venture started getting more funding, and within three years, the team of Zivame grew to 200 members. In no time, Richa received appreciation and awards for her venture, and later, her family also bestowed their love and support.
Her idea instigated a change of perception for Indian society regarding shopping for lingerie and pushed the thought of respect for a variety of choices of Indian women in the brains of the community.
Author’s Thoughts
Millennials who give up easily on themselves should learn from the struggle of Richa Kar, who was initially not supported for her idea and was laughed upon by her people.
Regardless of all the comments and unsupportive audience around her, she never stopped believing in herself and gave up on her hard work. She worked with patience and a smile which helped her to think beyond the taboos around which she was born and raised.
