Cancelo got the second in the 27th minute, cutting in from the left side and polishing off a fabulous run with a dazzling strike to quiet the homegroup.
At the half-hour mark, Newcastle was denied what appeared to be a reasonable punishment when City manager Ederson collided with Ryan Fraser. Still, neither arbitrator Martin Atkinson nor the VAR chose to mediate.
Despite starting the final period with a couple of fine saves from Dubravka, Newcastle’s fortunes deteriorated when Mahrez turned home Kevin De Bruyne‘s cross from the left wing with a deft volley in the 63rd minute to score his 50th Premier League goal.
Newcastle had taken Allan Saint-Maximin off the bench at halftime for Joe Willock, yet they only managed one effort on goal in the hour and a half – a close-range header from Callan Wilson that forced a superb one-hand save from Ederson.
Authentic’s inventive display on the wing was compensated in the 86th minute when Gabriel Jesus drove the ball across the goal and England forward, pummelling it home to seal the defeat.
