School is the primary source of knowledge but not the only place for learning. When it comes to developing children’s learning ability, one of the biggest mistakes a parent can make is to limit the learning to the classroom. But everything does not have to be like a classroom.
When children are at home, parents can be their teachers and, they should engage their kids in the learning activities as a fun time.
If parents want to enhance their children’s desire and ability to learn, they should extend the intellectual and social growth outside the classroom walls.
About the company
Based out of Mumbai, Skillmatics is a leading global direct-to-consumer (D2C) education brand led by a team of educators, gamers, and product designers who dedicated to creating innovative ways for children to learn through play.
The company’s main objective is to develop innovative products and games for children, build core skills, and strengthen key learning concepts.
Skillmatics is currently working in three key categories: learning resources, educational games and STEM toys.
About the founder and how he started Skillmatics
Skillmatics was founded in 2016 by Dhvanil Sheth, a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
Sheth had been looking for a way to leave his job and develop the retail space in his native country India. He was always clear that he would start his own business and become an entrepreneur.
After catching his three and a-half-year-old nephew trying to swipe a learning paper book, Sheth realized that he had found a real problem to solve.
In the following months, he started consulting parents in Mumbai to find out whether they wanted to move their children away from technology addiction.
When Sheth found out that the parents had the same concerns, he quit his job at Boston Consulting Group and invested $50,000 from his savings in this business model.
Business Model
At the initial stage, Skillmatics planned to design the early-learning games to shift the focus away from gadgets and develop their interest back to mind games.
Sheth focused more on the idea that young children learn quickly by repeating what is taught.
Further, working with product design experts, he came up with a range of reusable “write and wipe” math, science, logic games and language for children aged three to six.
Funding and investment
Skillmatics has raised funding total of $7.4 million over two rounds and, the latest round was on June 2021 from a Series A round.
Two investors fund the company, Jalaj Dani Family Office and Sequoia Capital India.
Grand Achievements
After succeeding in eight Skillmatics products, Sheth thought about selling the products online. Within six months, one of the products became the top-selling educational game on Amazon.
The company has a presence across 15 countries globally via its website and online marketplaces. It is also available in 3,000 retail stores and 15,000 offline stores worldwide.
To date, the company has sold approximately 3 million toys and games and its revenues, meanwhile, hit $2 million.
Future goals
The company will employ the funding to strengthen its dominance in the US across online and offline retail.
It also expects to double down on its team for data analytics, product design, technology, and marketing roles. It will also look forward to expanding its product range while targeting more age groups.
Conclusion
After extensive research and development, the companies like Skillmatics has developed educational products with truly innovative content and highly engaging activities for kids.
Conventionally, there has been a focus on gaining subject knowledge. But, in the future, I think the emphasis will be more on developing core learning.
