Christian Eriksen will no longer play in Italy this season because of the recent cardiac arrest he suffered while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020. Inter Milan has said that he will be free to leave the club, and the premier league might be his next destination.
During Denmark’s opening game against Finland in June, The Danish captain suffered a cardiac arrest and received treatment on the pitch.
Later, he was implanted with a device known as an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator which is a type of pacemaker that prevents fatal cardiac arrests by releasing a jolt of electricity to restore normal heart rhythm.
Francesco Braconaro, a member of the Italian Football Federation’s technical-scientific community, said in August that Eriksen would not be allowed to play unless the ICD (Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) was removed.
Inter Milan further stated that “With reference to the registration rights of the player Eriksen, it should be noted that the player has been temporarily inhibited by the Italian medical authority from sporting activity in the Current Season.”
Although the current condition of Eriksen does not meet the requirements of playing football in Italy, the same could be achieved in other countries where the player could resume competitive activity.
No Clarity in Christian Eriksen Future
There is no clarity as of now if other countries will allow Eriksen to play in their leagues with the ICD device implanted, but a Premier League is an option for him, but he will have to pass a sports cardiologist assessment first if he wants to return to the English top flight.
An FA spokesperson spoke to the PA news agency. He said that “With regard to Eriksen playing in England, it is impossible to comment on his individual circumstances without knowledge of his condition and the risks that come along with it.
As always, any assessment is done would be on an individual basis. In England, any player that has an abnormal cardiac screen or who develops a cardiac problem would be assessed by a sports cardiologist.”
“We would expect the sports cardiologist to be a member of the FA Cardiac consensus Panel. They are a group of experienced sports cardiologists who advise the FA regarding these issues and provide consultation and screening expertise for our cardiac screening programs in professional football.
“This would be done in consultation with the team doctor who looks after them. The cardiologist would look at the individual circumstances and the risk to the player and then decide whether the player can continue to play.
Every decision would be made with the player safety in mind. The FA oversees around 1,500 cardiac screens every year.”
So far, no player has been banned because of a cardiac screen, but any player with such an issue would be told about the risks of continuing to play.
CONCLUSION
If Christian Eriksen does return to play in the premier league, it would be interesting to see which team he decides to play. Will he go to one of the big names like Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea, or will he go back to Tottenham FC, where he spent 7 years before leaving for Inter Milan?
