The CBSE board has decided to team up with the Centre of Excellence for Blockchain Technology to store student certifications safely.
Student documentation will now be stored online and can be accessed anywhere.
WHAT IS BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY, AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS?
Blockchain is a system of recording information. This system compromises a digital register of duplicated transactions, and it is distributed across the entire network on the blockchain. One of the benefits of using this system is that the data stored cannot be hacked, changed or cracked.
One of the main reasons the CBSE board has decided to use blockchain technology is its security. A blockchain will record student certificates in a linked chain structure.
The result certificates will be kept in a distributed ledger owned by all the shareholders.
The information stored cannot be changed, hacked, or cracked since any change would require altering each shareholder’s ledger.
Another benefit of using this technology is the simplification of records. Since the certificates are stored online, it reduces the hassle of having to deal with paperwork.
HOW STUDENTS CAN VERIFY THEIR DATA
Suppose students want to verify the data online. They will have to follow the below-mentioned steps:
- Go to CBSE.certchain.nic.in or cbse.gov.in
- Click on verify option on the top menu of the homepage.
- Select class from the pop-up which appears
- Input details like roll no, date of birth (For class 10 only), year and type of examination, student name. Then click on Go.
- Once verification is complete, the most recent mark sheet of the student is displayed.
Once the certificates are digitally signed, they will be stored in the blockchain system with nodes at Bangalore, Pune and Jaipur. The NIC manages the certificates of data at its data centres.
Digital certificates are available only for students who passed out in the year 2019-2021. In the next couple of months, certificates of previous years will also be available.
CONCLUSION
Storing student data on the blockchain system is a good decision taken by the CBSE. At present, verification of documents is a time-consuming process for those in companies and universities, so they most often ask for original documents. With the new technology, documents can be easily accessed online.
This new technology makes things easier for students too. When the old system was in use, if a student misplaces an original certificate, they would have to compulsorily visit the university office to ask for another original document.
Now that would no longer be necessary because of the online availability of records.
