According to football clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan, the famous San Siro will be replaced by a stadium built by architecture firm Populous.
The Cathedral, a new stadium in Milan, will host Italian top-flight football clubs AC Milan and Internazionale Milano, better known as Inter Milan.
It will take the place of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, which has been the home of the teams since 1926 and is known as the San Siro.
Since 1926, AC Milan and Inter have played at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. The stadium, which seats over 80,000 people, is Italy’s largest and has hosted many of the sport’s most important contests.
The 60,000-seat facility will be rectangular in design with vertical fins surrounding it. According to the studio, these fins will extend outwards from the stadium to support a glass wall that will enclose a “sunlit galleria.”
The stadium’s bowl was supposed to be the “most intimate in Europe,” with fans seated as close to the pitch as possible.
Photovoltaic panels will be installed on the roof, and rainwater will be collected and reused. As part of a makeover of the stadium’s site, the Cathedral will be built beside the present San Siro, which will after that be demolished.
In a pedestrian-free space spanning 110,000 square meters, sports and recreational facilities will be made available to Milan residents at no cost.

The area will be transformed into a pedestrian-only district, with existing automobile parking relocated underground and over 110,000 square meters of green space added on top.
The numerous concepts had been narrowed down to a shortlist, and the decision had been made. Therefore the Populous’ vision for the Nuovo Stadio di Milano will be used.
This beat Sportium’s Rings of Milano concept because of its design, which incorporates aspects from both the famed Duomo Cathedral in Milan and the Galleria, known as The Cathedral.
San Siro is the name neighbourhood in the city; hence the new stadium would be called San Siro.
The Stadium was designed by the same architectural team that designed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The new stadium for Milan and Inter should be erected in the San Siro region, with the current Stadio Meazza being partially dismantled following the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. The new stadium is expected to open in 2027.
More executive seats were added to optimize earnings, with Inter and Milan projected to earn €80 million per year from their new home. It will be smaller than the Meazza, with 65,000 seats instead of the existing 80,000.
The San Siro is one of the most well-known stadiums in the world. It was designed by architect Ulisse Stacchini and extensively refurbished for the 1990 World Cup by Ragazzi and Partners. Designer Fabio Novembre labelled it as “probably the most well-known site in Milan.”
