In the 14-year history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), R Ashwin has become the first player to “retire out.”
Ashwin batted at No. 6 against LSG, and he was replaced by Riyan Parag after playing two balls in the 19th over. He had scored 28 runs out of 23 before being retired. It is a tactical decision.
After being the first person to be retired out in this manner during Rajasthan Royals‘ match against Lucknow SuperGiants, in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2022 season, Ashwin Ravichandran feels we will witness a lot more instances of batters being retired out.
T20, as a sport, is approaching the level attained by football. They did something similar to how they use substitutes (retiring out). We’re already late, but I suspect this will become more frequent in the coming days. As Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel, “I don’t think it will have the same stigma as running someone out at the non-striker’s end.”
This move may not always be successful.
It could work and not work at the same time. These things happen all the time in football, and we still haven’t figured out T20 cricket. This is a sport for millennials. “This is the sport of the next generation,” he remarked.
In fact, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo score goals frequently in football. On the other hand, their goalkeeper must prevent goals and their defenders must defend well. Only then will Messi or Ronaldo be the center of attention.
Why it was the appropriate decision
“It was only a tactical move,” says the narrator. In fact, Riyan Parag has been batting quite well, so when the Gowtham over (16th over) was completed, I gave myself five to six balls to see if I could knock six or two fours, “Ashwin explained.
“I tried to hit a few balls in the slot and mistimed a few.” I tried everything I could think of, but I couldn’t get the timing right. There were just ten balls left in the innings, and someone like Riyan Parag was there. We may have a good score if he comes in and hits even two sixes. It was a calculated move.
