Amidst the chaotic run of events in the Premier League, with the COVID pandemic and match postponements, Man City have somehow made it out of the busy period unscathed.
They present themselves in an assertive position in the league with 50 points from 20 games after their 1-0 victory against Brentford on Wednesday. They are looking pretty comfortable in their title defence.
Chelsea’s Injury Woes
Thomas Tuchel and his men have dropped 9 points out of 18 in December as they are fighting with COVID and injuries. Late drama unfolded at stoppage time in Stamford Bridge on Wednesday against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Thanks to a 28th-minute header by Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea leading by a goal were left devastated when Danny Welbeck scored in the 91st minute and levelled the score. This was their 3rd draw in 4 matches.
The Blues were on top of the table on Matchday 14, but now, after Matchday 20, they’ve slipped 2nd and have made way to a huge gap of 8 points between the top 2 positions.
Liverpool, too Slip in the Title Race.
Liverpool were going neck to neck with ManchesterCity and Chelsea, with the three being considered clear favourites to contend for the title.
A 2-2 draw against Antonio Conte’s Tottenham and Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Leicester saw them lose important points.
They are 3rd in the table with 41 points but have a game in hand as the Boxing Day fixture against Leeds United was postponed due to the COVID outbreak.
Tough Fight for the 4th Spot
Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham, and Manchester United are all vying for the Champions League position at the table. Arsenal, currently in 4th, are looking in red hot form with a 5-0 victory over Norwich on Sunday.
West Ham is in 5th with 31 points, and Tottenham is in 7th with 30 points but has played only 17 matches.
Manchester United had an emphatic 3-1 win against Burnley on Thursday night and jumped to 6th in the table with 31 points and a game in hand than the team above.
Managers not Happy with the Situation
With players getting injured often and recovering from COVID, managers are unhappy about the number of matches they are playing and the number of substitutions that can be made in a match.
Jurgen Klopp Statement
“This wonderful game is so wonderful because usually the player on the pitch is in good shape, is well trained, is well recovered and can go for it. That’s why we love the game,”. “But now the situation is clear, the best league in the world and the most intense league in the world is the only league in Europe with still three subs. It’s not right.”
