After main competitor messaging service Whatsapp announced a controversial update in privacy policies in January, Signal faced technical difficulties. Along with its rival Telegram, the firm has reaped most online wrath over Whatsapp’s policy changes.
“Signal is having some technical issues. We are working hard to restore the service as quickly as possible,” an in-app message read.
According to the company’s earlier tweet, the interruption is caused by a hosting issue that is affecting parts of its service. The message stated, “We’re working on getting it back up.” User reports, as per Downdetector, indicate that Signal has been experiencing difficulties since Sunday, 11:05 p.m. EDT (Monday, 11:05 p.m. EDT).
SEVERAL USERS FACED ISSUES
According to user complaints submitted on Downdetector, the outage impacted Signal users worldwide, including the United States, Australia, and Germany, with a concentration of complaints in the United States. Robinhood, Reddit, Google’s Nest, and Tinder were also experiencing troubles, according to Downdetector, but it was unclear whether they were tied to the same hosting outage.
Signal was responsible for almost 43% of the reported difficulties while transmitting messages accounted for 36% and the server connection for 21%. According to the outage tracking website Downdetector, the number of reports from affected customers peaked at over 1,300 late Sunday.
The Signal did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the areas affected by the outage. “Signal is presently offline, due to a hosting outage affecting parts of our service,” the messaging app said in a tweet earlier on Monday.
HOW SIGNAL REACTS
According to the company, after a broad outage early Monday morning, Signal is back up and running at 100 per cent. Some users have been experiencing outages since around 8:30 a.m. IST today. While Downtdetector only displayed outages in the United States (Downdetector does not currently show Signal problems in India), other Twitter users reported outages on the instant messaging service.
“We are fully back up and running at 100%. Enjoy the rest of the week, everybody!” the company tweeted. According to outage tracker Downdetector, there were over 1,200 outage reports in the US at 8:35 IST on Monday morning.
The majority of the outages are in the United States, according to Downdetector’s outage map. Since Downdetector only shows Signal failures in the United States, it’s unclear how widespread the outage was.
